“The Night of Yao”, an evening party for charity. That was Grandmaster

One day in
November, 2008, former US President George Bush along with former First Lady
Barbara Bush made a special trip to attend a cultural event held by one of
his long time Chinese friends at the Chinese Civic Center in China town of
Houston. It happened that Cheng Jin Cai, the nineteenth Grandmaster of
Chen-style Tai Chi and one of the World’s Ten Martial Art Masters was at the
event also. A few years ago, when Grandmaster Cheng learned that the senior
Bush did sky diving at the age of 80, he wrote a letter to former President
Bush recommending Chen-style Tai Chi practice for living a longer life. Also
enclosed to the former President Bush were gifts of 6 teaching DVDs made by
Grandmaster Cheng and some Chen-style Tai Chi teaching materials. This act
was especially meaningful for the US-China friendship and has had a positive
impact on the promotion of Chen-style Tai Chi. Former President Bush was
very happy to meet Grandmaster Chen Jin Cai himself in person. He hugged
Grandmaster Cheng and said: “I practiced Chen-style Tai Chi when I was in
Beijing. I received your DVD and really appreciate it.” The former President
made witty and humorous remarks, saying that if he had been practicing
Chen-style Tai Chi all these years he’d have no problem living to 120 years
old. Grandmaster Cheng inquired about former President Bush’s future plan of
sky diving, Bush optimistically said that at least he would make another sky
dive at the age of 86 and he would like Grandmaster Cheng to come along to
cheer him up. Grandmaster Cheng gladly accepted the invitation. It happened
that the Health Section of World Chinese Weekly published Grandmaster
Cheng’s article on the health benefit of Chen-style Tai Chi, and Grandmaster
Cheng presented a copy to former President Bush who happily accepted the
magazine and shared a photo snap shot with him.
Grandmaster Cheng Jin Cai plans to further nurture Chen-style Tai Chi
teachers and descendants. He will not stop at Chen Style Tai Chi’s current
state of development. Establishing for Chen-style Tai Chi a level system
similar to that of Tae Kwon Do will make it more professional and standard.
This is another way to promote Chen-style Tai Chi and to have Tai Chi enter
into people’s lives, helping them reach newer and higher levels
